What is digital marketing?

Digital marketing is the process of getting people to visit a website in order to take a specific action.
There are only seven ways a potential customer can find and enter a website:
- Direct
- A person clicks on a saved bookmark, or types a website’s domain name directly into the address bar
- Organic
- A person clicks on an organic listing in a search result listing (Google, Bing, etc.)
- Paid
- A person clicks on a paid ad in a search result listing (ex. Google Ads)
- Social
- A person clicks on a website’s link while on social media (ex. Facebook)
- Email
- A person clicks on a website’s link in an email
- Referral
- A person clicks on a website’s link while on another website
- Display
- A person clicks on a paid display ad (ex. Google Display Ads)
- Other
- Any traffic that Google cannot attribute
Digital marketers use these channels – SEO, Paid Ads, Display Ads, Social Media Marketing, and Email Marketing – to create cross-channel campaigns that influence potential customers across multiple platforms and devices, and at all stages of their buying journey.
